Summer, winter or all-season tires: which should you choose?
There is more to a tire than its tread pattern. Here is how grip and wear differ, and what to check before buying for a Latvian winter.
Summer tires are intended for warm conditions; winter tires for cold weather and winter roads. An all-season tire covers a wider range, so it remains a compromise. The rubber's temperature response and the particular model's characteristics both matter.
Why are winter tires not extra protection in summer?
In warm conditions they can wear faster, respond less precisely and brake less effectively. Deep-looking tread does not by itself make a tire suitable for hot asphalt.
Why should summer tires not stay on for winter?
They are not intended for snow and ice. Plenty of tread does not turn them into winter tires. Do not wait until the first frost to discover the difference in traffic.
Who might choose all-season tires?
They can suit moderate mileage and journeys that can be adapted to the weather. Regular difficult winter routes or high summer mileage often favour separate seasonal sets. Judge the particular tires against your actual driving.
What should you check before winter in Latvia?
For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, the winter period from 1 December to 1 March requires winter tires carrying the mountain-and-snowflake marking (3PMSF) and at least 4 mm tread. M+S alone is insufficient. Do not automatically apply these requirements to all heavy vehicles.

Choosing without guessing
Check the vehicle's permitted size, load and speed ratings, tire condition and driving conditions. TAMIS can help select a set and arrange fitting. If the second set already has its own rims, mention that when booking.
