Complete wheel changes or tire fitting: what is the difference?

Two seasonal sets with their own rims and two tire sets sharing one set of rims involve different jobs. Here is the plain explanation.

Complete wheel changes or tire fitting: what is the difference?

The tire is the rubber part, the rim is the metal part and the wheel is the assembly. That explains the workshop's question: “Is your second set already on rims?”

If each season has its own rims

One complete set is removed from the car and the other is installed. Each tire stays on its rim. There are fewer mounting operations, but pressure, condition and correct tightening still need checking.

If summer and winter share the same rims

The wheels are removed, the tires are taken off the rims and the other set is fitted. The wheels are then balanced and installed again. This is more work, so its price cannot be compared directly with a simple complete wheel change.

Does balancing have to be done every time?

Balance is checked after fitting a tire to a rim. For a complete wheel set, the need is assessed from condition and previous symptoms. Vibration, missing weights or uneven wear justify a check; do not dismiss them just because the tire has stayed on its rim.

Two rim sets are not automatically cheaper for everyone

Include the cost of rims, storage and a second pressure sensor set if required. Vehicle specifications matter too. Choose according to ownership period and budget, rather than the cost of one seasonal change.

Describe your set when booking and bring the locking wheel bolt key if your car uses one. After the change, follow the workshop's and vehicle manufacturer's instructions about checking wheel bolt tightening again.
